An unusually high proportion of these are first-fill, which gives the whisky a rich, deep colour and intense flavour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e When the casks are at the peak of maturation, the whisky is gently reduced to 46.5% alcohol by volume with natural spring water drawn from boreholes deep beneath the Macallan Estate. It is then matured in dormant casks for at least six months, allowing the flavours to \"marry\" and harmonise.
